Assume they haven’t read it

Often those interviewing haven’t read your application or anything about you because someone else did the shortlisting. Behave as if they know nothing about you and… if you don’t say it out loud – you won’t get that tick on the scoresheet!

Stand out!

Have something with a distinct colour so that when the interviewer is trying to recall candidates afterwards they have something easy to remember you by. E.g. tie, pen, brooch, handbag. Presentation? Have a memorable USB stick… mine’s an airplane that lights up when used.

Whenever possible, say "I" not "we"

The interviewer wants to know what you did / what you think / what you can offer the role and the team. It’s often hard and slightly embarrassing – however you need to tell them what you made happen – especially if it’s something others wouldn’t have thought of or done.
